Support Liquid Biopsies

Cancer is responsible for around 3 in every 10 deaths in Australia and almost one in two Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 85. While advances in treatment have improved survival, many cancers are still detected too late and monitored using invasive, costly procedures. Liquid biopsies have the potential to transform cancer care through a simple blood test that can detect cancer biomarkers, monitor treatment response, identify resistance to therapy and guide highly personalised treatment decisions.

Transforming precision cancer care

Liquid biopsies are one of the most promising advances in precision oncology. By analysing traces of cancer in the bloodstream through a simple blood test, clinicians can gain critical insights into how a cancer is responding to treatment, whether it is developing resistance and whether disease remains after treatment.

“In almost all cases, where cancer treatment can be personalised, outcomes are significantly better.”

– Professor Nick Pavlakis – Medical Oncologist, Royal North Shore Hospital

A growing cancer challenge

Almost 1 in 2 Australians

will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85

Cancer incidence has increased 93%

in the past 25 years

Cancer remains the leading cause of death

for Australians aged 30–69

Invasive diagnostics limit access and outcomes

“The more sensitive the organ, the higher the risk. Every diagnostic technique relating to the brain, lungs, liver and kidneys is highly invasive.”

– Dr Helen Wheeler – Head of Clinical Trials Unit, Royal North Shore Hospital

A simple blood test with the power to transform care

A liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive blood test that can detect traces of cancer in the bloodstream, helping clinicians make more informed treatment decisions and identify cancer earlier if it returns.

This clinical trial will help:

  • Compare liquid biopsy results with traditional tissue biopsies
  • Match patients to targeted cancer treatments
  • Detect traces of cancer that remain after treatment
  • Improve understanding of how cancers respond to treatment and develop resistance
  • Build a valuable resource for future cancer research and innovation
  • Enable earlier detection of cancer progression and recurrence
  • Reduce exposure to unnecessary treatments through more precise therapy selection
  • Improve access to advanced cancer care for more patients
  • Support better survival and remission outcomes for people with cancer

“Because we treat such a large and diverse group of patients, we can turn research into real-world care much faster across Australia. Our goal is simple – to get more patients into the cure group and make that outcome routine.”

– Associate Professor Connie Diakos – Medical Oncologist, Royal North Shore Hospital

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

Help transform the future of cancer care

Liquid biopsies have the potential to improve care for people with a broad range of cancers, including those with advanced disease and those receiving treatment aimed at a cure. By providing real-time insights into how cancers respond to treatment, liquid biopsies can support more personalised care and better outcomes for patients.

By helping overcome barriers to DNA sequencing, liquid biopsies provide an opportunity to match patients to life-prolonging therapies on a previously unseen scale.
