In early 2024, Daniel found himself grappling with a personal battle that would change his life. What began as a simple injury—a fractured jaw—soon spiralled into a deeper mental health crisis. What seemed like a temporary setback triggered unresolved emotional wounds from his childhood, sending him into a downward spiral.
Initially, Daniel believed the physical injury was his main issue. But as time passed, it became clear that his emotional and mental health were being deeply affected. “I began to feel completely lost and unsure of how to move forward,” Daniel recalls. The emotional weight grew heavier, and he realised he couldn’t handle it alone.
By late 2024, Daniel’s mental health had deteriorated to the point where he was admitted to three different mental health hospitals, including Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH). It was a difficult time filled with uncertainty, but it also marked the beginning of his healing journey.
The healing journey: finding strength through support
Admitting that he needed help was one of the toughest moments for Daniel, as it is for many who suffer in silence. But his time at Royal North Shore Hospital opened his eyes to the importance of seeking help. “The care I received wasn’t just medical; it was compassionate,” Daniel says. “It was the understanding and the patience from the staff that made all the difference. They helped me rebuild myself when I thought I was falling apart.”
Through this experience, Daniel became more aware of the stigma surrounding mental health. Despite how widespread mental health struggles are, many people still hesitate to seek help due to fear of judgment. “Asking for help should never be seen as a weakness,” Daniel insists. “It’s one of the bravest things you can do. We need to normalise these conversations, just as we would with physical health.”
There are currently over 4 million Australians living with mental health conditions, and nearly 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health issue each year.
After receiving life-changing support during his toughest moments, Daniel felt a strong urge to give back. When he came across a flyer for the NORTH Foundation Three Peaks Challenge—a 22km trek across three of Australia’s highest mountains in the Snowy Mountains region—he immediately saw it as the perfect way to raise funds for mental health services. For Daniel, the challenge represents more than just climbing mountains. “It’s about showing that, no matter how difficult the journey, we can overcome the challenges we face, both mentally and physically,” he shares.
