Nina became a donor to the NORTH Foundation when she experienced firsthand the exceptional care her son received at Royal North Shore Hospital when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

“Three weeks before Callum’s tenth birthday,” said Nina, “our lives took an unexpected turn.”
Nina’s son Callum was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) diagnosis which became a whirlwind of hospital visits, insulin injections, and constant blood sugar checks. The family felt overwhelmed and frightened, facing a steep learning curve.

Nina recalls the moment they entered the Pediatric Endocrinology Department at Royal North Shore Hospital, a wave of relief washed over them. The incredible team there offered not just medical expertise but also unwavering emotional support. The healthcare team patiently answered endless questions, guiding the family through the complexities of diabetes management with kindness and understanding.
“Their consistent care and support became our lifeline,” said Nina. “Managing a 24/7 condition like this is incredibly challenging, but knowing we had a team of dedicated experts in our corner made all the difference.”
She remembers the staff at Royal North Shore Hospital going above and beyond, empowering them to navigate this new reality with confidence.
Today, Callum is a thriving 16-year-old. He surfs, sails, and even trains with a crew for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, ready to run his race the year he turns 18 years old. His diabetes hasn’t held him back; instead, the exceptional care he received has shown him that anything is possible.
