Themed “Shaping the Future of Healthcare for All,” the event celebrated the NORTH Foundation’s transformative contributions to advancing healthcare and medical research. The Governor-General opened the formalities by warmly congratulating the NORTH Foundation for its remarkable achievements over the past five years. She commended the NORTH Foundation’s dedication to advancing healthcare and medical research, noting how its work is making a profound difference not only for the local community but for people across Australia.

“The NORTH Foundation embodies the spirit of innovation and collaboration,” she said.

After her address, the Governor-General invited guests into Admiralty House for an exclusive tour, providing a unique opportunity to explore the historic residence.

“Your dedication to funding critical research, advancing clinical trials, and supporting state-of-the-art facilities has transformed countless lives and laid the groundwork for future breakthroughs,” he said.

During his address, NORTH Foundation CEO Gilbert Lorquet expressed pride in the NORTH Foundation’s progress and its dedicated team. He also reflected on how far the charity has come in five short years.

“It has been a real privilege to see so many milestones reached – each one a testament to what’s possible when compassionate donors and world-leading clinicians come together,” he said.

The event highlighted major achievements, including the establishment of NORTH STAR VNP, Australia’s leading cancer clinical trials centre, launched by the Governor-General in August. Thanks to the generosity of two donors, this collaboration between the NSLHD and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York is fast-tracking access to clinical trials for Australian patients.

Anthony Schembri also announced that within the coming year, the district aims to expand the NORTH Sydney Trials and Research (NORTH STAR) initiative as a beacon for clinical trials.

“NORTH STAR will not only represent groundbreaking advancements in cancer research but will also extend to other specialties, ensuring that clinical trials are integrated across all areas of care. Our NORTH STARS will guide these efforts, lighting the way toward a future where healthcare innovation is accessible to all.”

Grateful patient Rischeh Kumarasinghe concluded the formalities, delivering a heartfelt message about his own cancer journey and thanking donors for their generosity.
