The NORTH Foundation proudly marked its 5th anniversary with a special event hosted by Her Excellency Ms Sam Mostyn AO, Governor-General of Australia, on Friday 22 November 2024.
Themed “Shaping the Future of Healthcare for All,” the event celebrated the NORTH Foundation’s transformative contributions to advancing healthcare and medical research. Set against the stunning backdrop of Admiralty House in Kirribilli with stunning views of the Sydney Opera House, the evening reception offered a remarkable setting for reflection, gratitude, and inspiration.
The Governor-General opened the formalities by warmly congratulating the NORTH Foundation for its remarkable achievements over the past five years. She commended the NORTH Foundation’s dedication to advancing healthcare and medical research, noting how its work is making a profound difference not only for the local community but for people across Australia.
“The NORTH Foundation embodies the spirit of innovation and collaboration,” she said.
After her address, the Governor-General invited guests into Admiralty House for an exclusive tour, providing a unique opportunity to explore the historic residence.
NSLHD Chief Executive Anthony Schembri AM commended the NORTH Foundation and its donors for their remarkable contributions.
“Your dedication to funding critical research, advancing clinical trials, and supporting state-of-the-art facilities has transformed countless lives and laid the groundwork for future breakthroughs,” he said.
During his address, NORTH Foundation CEO Gilbert Lorquet expressed pride in the NORTH Foundation’s progress and its dedicated team. He also reflected on how far the charity has come in five short years.
“It has been a real privilege to see so many milestones reached – each one a testament to what’s possible when compassionate donors and world-leading clinicians come together,” he said.
The event highlighted major achievements, including the establishment of NORTH STAR VNP, Australia’s leading cancer clinical trials centre, launched by the Governor-General in August. Thanks to the generosity of two donors, this collaboration between the NSLHD and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York is fast-tracking access to clinical trials for Australian patients.
Anthony Schembri also announced that within the coming year, the district aims to expand the NORTH Sydney Trials and Research (NORTH STAR) initiative as a beacon for clinical trials.
“NORTH STAR will not only represent groundbreaking advancements in cancer research but will also extend to other specialties, ensuring that clinical trials are integrated across all areas of care. Our NORTH STARS will guide these efforts, lighting the way toward a future where healthcare innovation is accessible to all.”
Grateful patient Rischeh Kumarasinghe concluded the formalities, delivering a heartfelt message about his own cancer journey and thanking donors for their generosity.
“Together with the NORTH Foundation, you have made – and will make – a tremendous difference towards the next big breakthrough in treating life-threatening diseases,” he said.
Reflecting on the significance of the night, Gilbert Lorquet shared, “Having the Governor-General host our celebration underscores her deep commitment to improving health outcomes for Australians and we are inspired to continue shaping the future of healthcare for all.”
Anthony Schembri said, “It was a truly special occasion, bringing together our NORTH Foundation Board, staff, benefactors, and clinicians to celebrate the past five years of philanthropic impact. A big congratulations to NORTH Foundation Board Chair Michael Ellies, CEO Gilbert Lorquet and the entire team, including Amelia Seeto, for organising such a memorable evening.”
The NORTH Foundation extends its gratitude to everyone who has been part of its journey, from philanthropy champions across the NSLHD to its dedicated team and its compassionate supporters. Together, the NORTH Foundation looks forward to continuing its purpose of innovation, collaboration, and impact for many more years to come.
